How to install turf
Updated: May 22, 2020
Getting your yard redone with synthetic lawn or a putting green is an exciting time. Many customers are very curious about the work we do and they want to know exactly what's happening to their yard during the install process. I am here to break it all down for you and tell you the 10 steps of the turf install process.
Step 1: We excavate the existing lawn/area 3 inches deep. We will use a rototiller to assist with breaking up the dirt. If your yard is very large then we may even use a sod cutter and bobcat.
Step 2: Set all the boarders up around the perimeter of the area. The customers have the option to choose pressure treated 2x4, bender board, or metal edging.
Step 3: Install 3 inches of Class II base rock or DG (decomposed granite).
Step 4: Grade and compact the baserock and then compact the baserock to 95%. We will get the baserock about a 1/2 inch below the border.
Step 5: We then take out the Vibe Plate Compactor and compact the base rock with water.
Step 6: We remove the turf of your choice from the trailer. We lay the turf down and stretch it with carpet kickers to prevent it from wrinkling for when it expands and contracts naturally.
Step 7: Cut the edges for the perfect fit.
Step 8: Using 7 inch spikes we secure the turf down.
Step 9: If the yard requires seams we use a wavy seam technique to make the seams invisible.
Step 10: Power Broom the turf, in-fill with 2lb/sf of sand, and then one more round with the Power Broom.
Finished! I just laid out the entire turf install process start to finish. Depending on the size of your yard this process could take 1 day to 3 weeks. If you are a hardcore DIY person then these steps should definitely help. If you are looking for a professional to do the work then contact Turf Brothers, we would be more than happy to meet with you, take a look at your yard, and write up a quote.
